LPF Shout Out!

We are having a REUNION and in an effort to get ready for this grand event, we need your input. Any information will do. You can share with us where you are at this stage of your life. Enquiring minds want to know. Are you on track to be finished with your college education? Are you on your way to graduate school? Did you decide to go at it alone and you now are living on your own without any assistance from your parents? Are you married? Do you have children? Have you ever wondered, why me? Tell us, tell us! So, drop us a line with a picture even better. This way we can compare before Los Padres and after Los Padres. We are sure you are aging--gracefully.

This blog will allow us to have an interaction between all Los Padres Foundation award recipients and program participants, past and present. It will allow for all of you to speak openly about anything that goes on in your life and maybe even share your experience of what Los Padres Foundation has done for you.

Check back frequently, as this blog will be updated to reflect current news, important dates and helpful information.

We are in the process of re-designing our website. We would like to add a page of Success Stories from our past award recipients. But we need YOUR help! If you would like to participate please e-mail us in 500 words or less how your life has changed since you have been involved with the Los Padres Foundation. Also, please send us a picture of yourself, as we would love to include it with your story!

Thanks for participating and we wish you all of the best luck in your future endeavors!

Hey everybody!

My name is Julio Benitez and I have been a Los Padres Scholarship recipeint since 2003.

I am currently a senior at SUNY New Paltz and will be graduating this May. I am an adolescent education and English major and this semester I am student teaching in Manhattan. In my time at New Paltz I have been part of the campus radio station and I was iniated a brother of the Tau Kappa Epsilon Fraternity, which is the largest fraternity in the world with over 250,000 brothers worldwide.

I am originally from South Queens but I am now living in Inwood, Long Island with my family, which is right on the Queens/Long Island border.

I think that covers it pretty much. I am really stoked that the Los Padres Foundation wants to have a reunion. I consider Los Padres very much part of my family and look forward to this taking a more definitive shape.

Siempre pa' Adelante!
~ Julio A. Benitez

ps: Any LPF recipients that remember me, please email me at JulioABenitez@gmail.com to catch up.

Hello Everyone,
I am currently a senior at Lehman College and a member of the Association for Proffecionals in Finance and Accounting(ALFA). I have been a Los padres recipient since 2003. I am expecting to graduate in May 2007 and will prepare to take my CPA Exam in the fall. I am currently volunteering as a tax Aid to senior citizens and low income families around my neighborhood in Washington Heights.
I love the fact that Los Padres has let us unite and hear from one another. Hope to hear more about everyone soon.

Chao,
Mayelin Soto

Wow, where do I begin...well my name is Mallory-Kim Martinez and I was a recipient of the Los Padres Scholarship in 2003. Most of you who went with me to Washington in 2003 probably remember me as the girl with the long hair who sang at the dinner.

I started off at Queens College wanting to be a voice performance major. I pursued this for my first year and then decided that it wasnt what I really wanted to do with my life. I sung with the Young Peoples Chorus of New York City and quit that at the end of my freshman year. I chose to Major in Sociology and minor in music in the middle of my sophmore year. When I changed my major, I got into a Peer Counseling program and I have had the opportunity to help students of campus academically and personally.

I have been very active in a Christian group on campus since my freshman year and Im the Vice President of that group now. I have been on lots of leadership retreats where I was taught about Jesus and how to share His love with others. I led the womens bible study on campus and sang for our worship team. I am really active in my church where I sing for Sunday services and for our Christmas Plays. I also do my community service at the All Stars Project where I do administrative work for the Assistant Managing Director. He sometimes produces the plays shown at the All Stars. While working at the All Stars, I have met a few famous people, one of which was Daphne Ruben-Vega, the first Mimi in RENT.

I have been on the deans list for a while now and look forward to graduating by December of this year. After graduation, I would like to apply for graduate school at Hunter College for Social Work in hopes that one day I could open up my own organization for young troubled women.

I still live with my parents and I am single baby!!! Thats right...Mallory is single...hehe...and Im loving it.
Thats about it...I look forward to this reunion...it would be great to see where everyone is in their life.

PS...if anyone remembers me and would like to chat you could add me as a friend on myspace. Heres my url...myspace.com/oneinhim.
I hope to hear from some of you.

God Bless!!!

My name is Cynthia David and I am an Elementary Education major and French minor at the University of Scranton a Jesuit Institution. I can say that if it wasn’t for the Los Padres Foundation Tuition Assistance Program, I wouldn’t be able to attend such a prestigious university.

I’m a sophomore now and I am currently in Dakar, Senegal putting my French language skills in perspective. Not everyone has the opportunity to study abroad but yet I ceased this opportunity by applying for grants and once again with help of the Los Padres Foundation. I have only been in Dakar for a week now and I must say it is an eye opening experience. In one week I have dismantled numerous stereotypes. Not all of Africa is poor, there are many wealthy people, and Africa isn’t just about lions and the jungle and much more.

I have seen that when good things happen to me, the Los Padres foundation is right by my side. Last summer I was the only rising sophomore interning at Wolf Trap Foundation for the Performing Arts. I had never heard about Wolf Trap until I went there with LPF during orientation. As an education major I was intrigued to find out how the Education Dept. at Wolf Trap could teach 3-5 year olds through the arts. I applied and was granted a position in the Education Department. I learned so much about the correlation between the arts, music, and dance and education. I also met many wonderful people through Wolf Trap.

Overall, I like to live by the quote “if there is a will, there is a way.” My will was to enroll in a university and receive a degree. My way was through grants and scholarships like LPF College Tuition Assistance Program. I encourage you to spread the word about LPF and the doors LPF opens. I am proud to say that I am a Los Padres Foundation scholar.

Hola mi gente!!
My name is Yokasta Tineo; I became a LPF scholarship recipient in 2003. I went to the Calhoun School and now attend Wesleyan University. I major in anthropology and psychology (gotta love the social sciences!) and I am still in the process of finishing my senior essay on Afro-Dominican women and how they express their gender and racial identities through the arts and education as a form of social resistance. Last spring I was abroad in Salvador Brazil through the CIEE program and I absolutely loved it, I even went back for spring break last week. I am now tri-lingual! I maintain myself busy with student group life (I belong to dance groups and identity groups and help put up shows and events on campus).

Its incredible how fast time passes, I am already graduating May 27th!! Open invitations to everyone…The only plan I have definitely decided upon is working in NYC with youth for the summer then finding a job or internship in the Dominican Republic from August 07’ to May 08’. After that I plan to come back to NYC and begin my graduate school application process (I want to get a masters in organizational psychology, and eventually also pursue massage therapy [yes its random I know]). Eventually I also want to go back to Brazil and live and work there for some time. Who knows, possibilities are endless!

I wish everyone the best…I look forward to seeing everyone. Feel free to contact me: Yokast10@gmail.com.

Much Love&Respect
Thank you LPF!!!

wow!! I feel so old!! haha...My name is Katia Suero and I was one of the FIRST recipients of Los Padres...my memories of this program, the people, the mentors...are soo great!! and I was sooo proud and felt so privileged to have received an invitation for the reunion taking place on June, 9th...I am VERY excited to see those who lent me hand back in 1995-1996 (Yes people more than 10 years ago!! hence why I feel old!) I truly believe this program helped me and my group at that point to succeed and gave us a meeting point/a common ground (at that time City College) to express ourselves and work as a team together by re-enforcing our individual strengths and goals and shining as a community.

Hola a todos! My name is Gina Marie Jones and I was a Los Padres Recipient from 1998-2002. I am so happy to have have found this webpage today. I would never forget LPF. They were the only outside financial help I was able to obtain because they believed in me and knew I would do well. I graduated from The College of New Rochelle with honors on May 2002. During my college years I studied abroad, did lots of volunteer work, participated in many college activities and pretty much be the best I can be. I currently work at a College for the HR/Business Office. I am going back to Graduate School in Fall 07 part-time for the time being to pursue a degree in Counseling. After college I treated myself and my family a trip to Puerto Rico twice to visit relatives. I always wanted to go to Puerto Rico during the holidays and I was able to go for 3 weeks, Christmas of 2005. My traveling did not stop there. I visited South America and some more islands of the Caribbean. I am forever grateful for all that LPF did for me and so happy they gave me a chance and understood where I was coming from. I love my Puerto Rican heritage so much and happy to see when Puerto Ricans/Latinos come out for a good cause. Keep Representing! Gracias por todo Los Padres!

My friend and I were recently talking about how we as a society are so hooked onto electronics. Reading this post makes me think back to that debate we had, and just how inseparable from electronics we have all become.

I don't mean this in a bad way, of course! Ethical concerns aside... I just hope that as technology further advances, the possibility of copying our brains onto a digital medium becomes a true reality. It's a fantasy that I dream about every once in a while.
